The name of the group (
roughly pronounced "eh-den mee keh-dem ") is
inspired by the biblical verse: “And YHWH God planted a garden
in Eden from the East ( 'eden mi qedem -עדן
מקדם
), and placed there the
human that He had formed.” (Genesis 2:8) The term "‘eden mi
qedem" in Hebrew, or "‘aden min qadeem"عدن
من قديم in Arabic, can
also be translated as "Eden from ancient times, " as the word
"Qedem"/ "Qadim" literally means "ancient times"
or "long ago." This ancient garden of the East speaks of a
time and place of equilibrium and harmony between man and his
brother, and his surroundings.
For many people of the world, the Garden of Eden has been the
quintessential symbol for the ideal state of existence that we
seek to return to. 'Eden Mi Qedem strives to connect us to
that place of our ancient origins; to a place of harmony between
different understandings of truth, between East and West, and
between tradition and modernity.
